Cross-border roaming charges are a real concern for Northern Ireland companies conducting business across the Northern and Southern Ireland border. Businesses working in border regions are particularly affected by inadvertent roaming, when their mobile phones accidentally connect to a mast in the Republic of Ireland and their domestic calls are then billed as international calls. In response to this issue, Belfast-based telecoms firm, Barclay Communications has launched a new All-Ireland and European tariff in partnership with O2 that will make life easier, increase productivity and reduce costs for its Northern Ireland customers.
The company has lobbied relentlessly for the past 5 years on behalf of its customers to make this happen. This new tariff, which is currently only available to Barclay Communications’ Northern Ireland customers will enable people to use their mobile devices as if they were at home, when in the Republic of Ireland and in the rest of Europe. The tariff will also effectively end the problem of inadvertent roaming experienced by some of its customers based in border areas, such as Newry, Strabane and Castlederg. This tariff differs from other All-Ireland options on the market as it includes the whole of the EU, not just All-Ireland. There are also no additional charges on top of a customer’s monthly tariff, making it more cost-effective.
