With over two billion Bluetooth devices currently on the marketplace, a number that is rapidly expanding, the launched of a new Bluetooth standard has excited the industry.
The new Bluetooth 3.0 standard is here and is officially known as Bluetooth 3.0 + HS (High Speed). The standard features Wi-Fi standard, 802.11 PAL which enables faster transfers than previously.
Whereas the first Bluetooth could offer a transfer rate of 771 Kbps, Bluetooth 3.0 has the capability to reach 24Mbps. As well as sending images from phone to phone, the new standard 3.0 is able to accommodate televisions, projectors and external hard drives as well as camcorder-to-HDTV, PC-to-PMP and UMPC-to-printer transfers
However, some report that the standard will not be supported by various software, most notably the iPhone version 3 software. Certain devices that operate Bluetooth 2.1 can be upgraded to 3.0, but there are rumours that you will need plug-in dongles to allow mobiles to support the new Bluetooth standard.
Mike Foley, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG stated: "Utilising the 802.11 radio was a natural choice as it provnewsIdes efficiencies for both our members and consumers – members get more function out of the two radios they are already including in devices, and consumers with Bluetooth 3.0 + HS products will get faster exchange of information without changing how they connect. We are excited to expand the possibilities of the PAN."
He went on to add that a low-power specification of Bluetooth 3.0 was in the pipeline and details would hopefully be announced within the next twelve months or so.
